MEC Majuba meeting with officials to improve enrolment and pass rate
During the meeting, MEC Majuba indicated that Pepper the Robot pledged to work side by side
Mpumalanga MEC for Education Mr Bonakele Majuba met with some officials at the OR Tambo Mathematics, Science and Technology Academy recently.
The meeting was held for two reasons according to MEC Majuba.
First, he thanked Standard Bank for their generous support that enabled the academy to replace some of the technical resources that were stolen, thus jeopardizing the efficiency of the academy.
During the meeting, MEC Majuba indicated that Pepper the Robot pledged to work side by side with the department as their ambassador in their quest to roll out Coding and Robotics in schools.
“I wish that we should immediately develop a programme so that we can get everyone, young and old, excited about our move to introduce Coding and Robotics while at the same time enabling everyone to appreciate the significance of these subjects in the present age of technology. We need to look at what is at our disposal and ensure that we strengthen all loose ends to have a seamless rollout of coding and robotics in the province. I will appreciate that Mpumalanga leads from the front and be a true trendsetter on this matter. I wish that we can tap on the wisdom and insight from all sectors of the economy including big businesses as we roll out this programme. No one must be left behind. I really wish that the department and Standard Bank can collaborate purposefully on this matter of Coding and Robotics and work together to lobby for more resources in the country and even beyond.”
He said it was all schools can improve their enrolment and pass rate and something need to be done to fix the problem.
He added by saying that the province has established the OR Tambo Mathematics, Science and Technology Academy as an intervention to remedy all the problems encountered.
“This time around the department will intensify its support programmes to ensure that all learners find it easy to solve problems, thinks critically and work collaboratively and creatively. Our learners must be assisted to function in a digital and informative-driven world, develop computational thinking skills to support coding as well as all other subjects and apply digital skills and transfer these skills to solve everyday problems. To this end, the department will introduce a pilot coding and robotics starting with 17 schools for grades R to 3 and 111 for grade 7. This will be incremental in the introduction to other grades until grade 9 in 2024,” concluded MEC Majuba.
