Locals ‘Race to the Sun’

This route is tough, but manageable over the distance that is covered

A couple of cyclists from eMalahleni took on the Race to the Sun challenge ‒ It was a great experience and a wonderful day for cyclists on their bikes.

Race to the Sun is a prestigious and challenging event for adventurous mountain bikers.

The event was supposed to take place on Saturday, May 9 but due to Covid-19 it was postponed to Saturday, October 3.

The race covers a 167km journey starting at Hartbeespoort, Die Oewer, taking cyclists through a picturesque landscape, finishing at Sun City.

Having a comfortable ride was Chris Reyneke.

This route is tough, but manageable over the distance that is covered.

It’s technical in some sections of the route, but the route took cyclists through gravel, dirt, mud pools and tar roads.

Chris Reyneke – 5 hours and 48 minutes.
Dean Traill – 6 hours and 27 minutes.
Pelop Panagopoulos – 6 hours and 39 minutes.
Alber Botha – 7 hours and 42 minutes.
Susan Dannler – 7 hours and 47 minutes.
Bianca Buys – 8 hours and 18 minutes.
Annetjie van Wyk and Jurie Krige on a tandem – 5 hours and 57 minutes.
Jaco van Rooyen and Andre Viljoen on a tandem – 7 hours and 54 minutes.

Many cyclists are already looking at next year’s Race to the Sun as it was such an enjoyable race.
