TUT corporate channels manager responds to student protest

The students also alleged the TUT Enterprise Holdings (TUTEH) is over-pricing accommodation for students in eMalahleni.

Students at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) eMalahleni campus protested against alleged lack of equal distribution of funds to students and the over-pricing of accommodation for at least three weeks.

WITBANK NEWS reported previously that it is in communication with TUT’s corporate channels manager, Ms Willa de Ruyter, to respond to the allegations made by the students.

She responded and said that memorandum that stated the students’ grievances has reached the rightful parties.

The students also alleged the TUT Enterprise Holdings (TUTEH) is over-pricing accommodation for students in eMalahleni.

“TUTEH is not aware of any accredited accommodation provider in eMalahleni who is over-pricing accommodation. All accredited service providers are required to sign a Memorandum of Agreement which, among other things, stipulates the rental rate they intend charging the students.”

“TUTEH insists, with all service providers, that the rate charged should be within the guidelines provided by NSFAS and should also be comparable to other facilities of similar quality.”

She added that there are currently only two residences in eMalahleni authorised to accommodate students in 2020.

“Both residences are not accredited but are leased by the university and its wholly-owned company, TUT Enterprise Holdings (TUTEH). The fee that the students pay at both these facilities is within the NSFAS rates, which also serve as benchmarks for affordability.”

She also highlighted that all campus activities resumed on Monday, February 17.
