Hospital waiting on MEC to deliver on promises at Witbank Hospital

The suspect allegedly drew a pistol and shot Zumbha several times, then left the hospital

Only a few health professionals were seen at Witbank Hospital earlier this week.

Others are still downing tools waiting for the MEC of Health, Ms Sasekani Manzini to deliver on her promise to beef up security at the referral hospital.

Unions gave the MEC until Wednesday, November 27 to proof that she is taking the situation seriously.

This situation emanated from a shooting on November 16 when 30-year-old Mr Selvino Zumbha was fatally shot in a corridor in the hospital.

Zumbha was admitted on Wednesday, November 13 at around 21:53 with gun shot wounds in his upper body.

It is believed he was shot at his home in Kwa-Guqa.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Leonard Hlathi said Zumbha had recognised the suspect when he entered the ward he was laying in. A scuffle ensued between them to a point where they reached the corridors of the ward.

The suspect allegedly drew a pistol and shot Zumbha several times, then left the hospital.

Twenty more security guards have been appointed to secure the hospital in the interim.

By the time going to press there still was no feedback from the security company, Mofoko Security or the Department of Health.
