Two years after the brutal killing of a 60-year-old mother and her 24-year-old daughter in Clewer, the accused was sentenced in the High Court at Delmas Magistrate Court last week.

Nompumelelo Stephina Ngwenya (32) was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment on both murder charges, as well as 10 years for kidnapping and an additional 10 years for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. All the sentences will run concurrently.

Ngwenya’s husband, Lucky (35) is still standing trial for his suspected involvement in the murders. He did not plead guilty and is expected to appear in court next year February.

The body of Ms Nozipho Shabangu was found in her garage at her home in Clewer on December 7, 2016.

It was found that Ms Shabangu was poisoned as she had bled from the mouth and nose. Shabangu’s silver Volkswagen Polo had been taken from the garage and according to a witness it was seen being driven by the daughter, Ms Samkelo Shabangu (24). Her body was later found at the local cemetery.

Vosman Police Intelligence team took up the investigation which led them to Phalaborwa where they arrested the couple and recovered the stolen Volkswagen Polo. The arrest and recovery took place on December 12.

“The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma commended the investigation team for securing this sentence. He believes that it will serve as a deterrent to other would-be criminals,” said Sergeant Gerald Sedibe.
