Before you go ahead with that ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ job application, take a closer look before you become one of the innocent victims of ruthless scammers.

W/O Isaac Gumede is busy with an investigation where a policeman and security guard were arrested early in September after they allegedly pulled a scam that left hundreds of jobseekers without hope.

A mine on the old Middelburg Road next to Witbank Brickworks just became operational and jobseekers handed their CV’s in at the security in the hope of landing a job in the mining sector.

Unfortunately some became easy prey as their CV’s were put one side, they were contacted and told to pay R1 500 to secure the job they applied for.

The scammers ever politely reduced the amount to R700 if the jobseekers could not afford the total amount.

“The policeman and security guard were arrested and we will be going to court soon. Our investigation is near completion,” W/O Gumede said.

He is looking for more people who were scammed by the two suspected scammers.

If you were contacted to pay R1 500 before you were appointed, contact W/O Gumede: 082 709 4539.

“If a person asks you for money in advance when you applied for a job, know that you have probably been scammed. Most reputable companies will absorb these costs themselves,” warned Capt Eddie Hall, police spokesperson.

The alleged job scammers will be appearing in Witbank Magistrate’s Court on October 30.
