Ma Albertina Sisulu was one of the leaders who led women during the march to the Union Buildings in 1956. As the country celebrates her courage, determination and commitment, the people staying in that street are not celebrating at all because of a sewerage problem.

The sewerage flooded house in Vosman, apparently the family has moved because of the sewerage problem.

Ma Sisulu like Mandela would be 100 years this year if she was still alive. As the country celebrates women’s month in August the people in Albertina Sisulu Street are not celebrating at all.

One of the houses in the street has had a sewerage problem also affecting three other houses. A neighbour said that they had reported the matter early in July and also made a follow-up later but they did not receive any respond from the municipality.

Community members also said that the sewerage does not last more than two months working as it needs to be fixed regularly.

The sewerage not only affects one house but three other houses as well and spreading across a vast area of Vosman.

In the affected house stays a sickly person who has decided to move out because her condition got worse because of the sewerage problem according the community members.

“As parents of young children staying in the area, we are concerned because our children are often found playing in the sewerage pool. During rainy seasons it is worse as the house is flooded with water as it is situated in a low laying area as well,” said a concerned community member.

It is said that the family staying in the house once moved out but they had to come back and now they have moved out again. The neighbours also said that the house owner died some years back leaving his sickly girlfriend in the house.

The house in Vosman flooded in sewerage water making it impossible to go in and out of the house.

The girlfriend was recently discharged from the hospital, she is understood to be staying somewhere in Vosman with relatives.

Emalahleni municipality communication manager Mr Kingdom Mabuza said they want the house owner so that they can refer to the relevant department.
