Clewer residents bump heads over speed bumps

The community of Clewer took matters into their own hands when they set up their own speed bumps on a road where speed is a major problem.

The community of Clewer took matters into their own hands when they set up their own speed bumps on a road where speed is a major problem.

Although the intention was good, it was illegal.

The bumps were built on May 11, and since then several vehicles have been damaged because the bumps are too high and have not been built according to specification.

“I have already complained about the day the bumps were laid. I can see a danger when it comes and these slippery bumps are just a danger, “said one of the residents, Landi Bartfai.

Because the bumps are so high, motorists are now starting to drive around the bumps, so much so that there is already a road on the sidewalk.

This gravel road now has large holes filled with garbage.

“I’ve been calling the municipality since 11 May on a daily basis to justify them again, but they give me the same excuse every day,” said Bartfai despondently.

“I also informed the councillor about the problem, but unfortunately he has no answers, just excuses,” she said.

The spokesperson, Mr Kingdom Mabuza concluded,

“It is illegal for anyone to build a speed hump on any road‎. Residents are advised to make a proper application to the Municipality when they wish to have a speed hump built on any road. The Municipality take into consideration many factors before a hump could be build. Factors such as the speed limit and the volume of vehicles using a particular road are considered to determine whether it is appropriate to build a speed hump or not. The size of the speed hump is also informed by those factors.”
