The community of eMalahleni are fed up with the lack of basic needs supplied by the Emalahleni Municipality.

A petition has been brought forward calling on residents to sign their name if their human rights have been violated in regards to ongoing issues with the Emalahleni Municipality.

The petition reads:

“We the undersigned residents of Emalahleni Local Municipality, noting that our community has been without constant provision of electricity, sign this petition out of desperation as our dignity has been violated. We call on the municipality to continually maintain infrastructure to ensure a trouble-free provision of electricity. Municipal Systems Act (Section 73 (1a)) states that a municipality must give effect to the provisions of the Constitution and give priority to the basic needs of the local community.”

Marianne Venter requests that everyone in Emalahleni signs the petition regarding the lack of infrastructure and electricity.

The petition was raised with regard to the condition of old infrastructure – poor wire connection, faulty and stolen cables which lead to constant power outages. The poor infrastructure and open sub-stations pose a safety threat to residents, particularly children. And the lack of street lights compromises the safety of citizens and is likely to escalate crime in the area.

“Residents are urged to contact their councillors and sign the petition which will be submitted to Council for discussion and action,” said Cllr Marianne Venter.

If you are interested in signing the petition contact your relevant councillor:
