Matthews wins SA road cycling title

He outfoxed some big contenders to claim the SA title.

MIDVAAL – Dániyal Matthews won the South African National Road Cycling Championships at Café du Cirque in the Midvaal Local Municipality on Sunday afternoon after a two-man sprint to the finish line.

The rider from the KwaZulu-Natal-based Team Siata pipped the so-called ‘Mayor of the South’ Casper Kruger from Team Honeycomb to the line, showcasing his prowess as a sprinter.

Dan Loubser finished in third place.

Matthews admitted that Kruger had put in strong efforts in the two-man breakaway.

The two had earlier survived in a four-man breakaway, for quite a while before the duo split from the group of four in a decisive move in the final lap.

Matthews and Kruger outwitted several international riders like Alan Hatherly and Stefan de Bod as the peloton struggled to catch up with the breakaway.

A day earlier S’annara Grove had won the women’s road race, while Hayley Preen and Tiffany Keep rounded off the podium in second and third respectively.

This brings an end to another thrilling edition of the SA National Road and Time Trial Champs, which for a second consecutive year had been hosted by the Midvaal Local Municipality.
