The campaign was launched by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and is aimed at ensuring that schools across the province are fully equipped to receive learners and provide quality education as the new academic year begins.
VEREENIGING – Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara led the School Readiness Campaign in the Sedibeng District as schools opened for the 2025 academic year.
The campaign was launched by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and is aimed at ensuring that schools across the province are fully equipped to receive learners and provide quality education as the new academic year begins.
Motara was flanked by the Sedibeng District mayor Lerato Maloka and Disebo Tlebere, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, and other government officials.
General Smuts High School in Vereeniging, Thuto-Lore Secondary School, Mohlodi Maritime School of Specialisation, and Setshabelong Day Care Centre in Sharpeville were visited.
The visit assessed infrastructure, safety, learning materials, and educator support. Motara during her visit engaged directly with school management teams, educators, and learners. At some schools, management informed the MEC of challenges requiring the government’s attention including infrastructure and resources. Motara and other officials handed out dignitary packs to learners.
At General Smuts, Motara urged learners to do their best to ensure they garner good results at the end of the year.
“The matric year is very short and soon you will be writing your prelims and soon after that your final matric exams. I urge you to work hard to make your dreams come true.” Motara said learners should find comfort that the only thing they have to stress about is their academics.
The school headmaster Hendrik Opperman shared the same sentiments. The School Governing Body (SGB) highlighted the importance of a solid management team that would lead the school to greater heights. They promised to work hard to improve the school’s matric results. Motara said she was happy with the overall readiness of schools in the region.
