This, according to Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), is due to an underground fire at the shortcut which used to be a coal vending spot.

The incident was reported to the municipality on Monday (October 7) by the Ward 38 councillor after which a Fire Department team was dispatched.

The team assessed the affected area and discovered the fire was out of sight and challenging to detect. ELM said efforts to contain the problem were unsuccessful, however, the team will continue with measures to put out the fire today (October 8).

In a statement, the ELM Public Safety Department warned residents to avoid using the shortcut until the situation normalises.
