Sewer spillages in parts of Vereeniging

The intersections at Union Street/Lewis Avenue and Union Street/Smuts Avenue in the Vereeniging CBD will be closed due to repair work to a sewer line.

This after the main sewer line at the corner of Voortrekker Street and Lewis Avenue collapsed.

In a statement on Monday, the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) said it is aware of the sewage spillage challenges affecting consumers in parts of Vereeniging Central and Extension 2.

“A team was dispatched to the site on August 28 to replace the collapsed concrete line with a durable HDPE line. To speedup repairs, technicians will be using the pipe cracking technology method that will reduce the repair period to three weeks.”

According to ELM, as a short-term solution technicians will bypass the existing sewer line to relieve affected consumers from further spillages. The complex bypass operations are required to transfer the wastewater to another part of the sewer network not affected by ongoing repairs.

“The municipality would like to reassure consumers at Vereeniging Extension 2, Smuts Avenue, Livingstone Avenue, Lewis Avenue, George Street, Botha Street, Edward Street, Joubert Street, Leslie Street and parts of Voortrekker Street that we are taking all necessary steps to deal with this problem.”

The municipality also warned road users of closures at the intersection of Union Street/Lewis Avenue and Union Street/Smuts Avenue in the Vereeniging CBD from today until Monday, September 30.

The closures are required to facilitate sewer line repairs for three weeks pending unforeseen delays.

Road users are requested to consider alternative routes to avoid unnecessary delays.
