This marathon is hosted by former South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Molefi Oliphant in conjunction with Athletics Vaal Triangle. The much-anticipated race is sponsored by Rand Water. The runners will use this race to qualify for the 2025 Comrades Marathon.
Since its inception six years ago, the Vaal River City Marathon attracted top runners all over the African continent. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Oliphant said they can’t wait to welcome back those athletes in the Vaal.
He anticipates stiff competition with runners using this event to qualify for the Comrades Marathon. “For the past six year the competition is becoming more and more tough because athletes use this marathon to qualify for the Comrades Marathon.
“I must say this is the best thing happening in our region especially in the Emfuleni Municipality. I have no doubt that this Vaal River City Marathon plays an important role in our economy. You can see people selling stuff on the pavement to feed their family, hence the boost to our economy,” said Oliphant, who is also the Lifetime SAFA President.

Meanwhile, Dr Oliphant said they have received 2827 entrance from athletes and they expect more numbers with closing date is on September 2.
