Nepotism allegations continue at SDM

"All posts are advertised, shortlisting panel set up, interviews held, and where necessary vetting is undertaken.”

SEDIBENG. – The Board of Directors of New Horizon Movement (NHM) convened an urgent meeting to address the recent nepotism allegations against its president, Bishop Vincent Jones, recently.

The serious allegations which emerged on a Current Affairs program of popular local radio station, Thetha FM, mentioned the evasion of proper employment procedures at the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) to favour Jones’ daughter.

The NHM is in a coalition government with different parties at the SDM, and Jones is one of the Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMC). He was previously an MMC at the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) where he apparently had a fallout with the Executive Mayor, Sipho Radebe.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, NHM spokesperson, Mpho Khang said that during the urgent meeting, Jones comprehensively explained the circumstances surrounding these allegations.

“After a thorough review and discussion, we are satisfied with his account. We take these allegations seriously and recognize their potential impact on our leader and our movement. Based on our assessment, investigating this matter requires technical expertise that we lack. With the information available to us, we are unable to initiate any formal process at this time,” Khang said.

He added that should new information emerge in the future (regarding the allegations), “We will not hesitate to take appropriate action. Cllr Vincent Jones has always demonstrated a strong commitment to integrity and ethical conduct. His track record speaks volumes about his dedication and contributions to our movement, the Emfuleni Local Municipality, The Sedibeng District Municipality and community.”

Khang ended by saying that NHM stands by its leader, confident in his ability to continue leading effectively without fear of political pushback and favouritism.

Meanwhile, during the Thetha FM program, allegations also emerged that Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor, Lerato Maloka had hired two of her children in the Licensing Department.

To these allegations the SDM had earlier replied, “Sedibeng District Municipality has no function undertaken by Traffic Officers. The Municipality always complies with Human Resources policies and processes when filling all vacant posts. Thus, all posts are advertised, shortlisting panel set up, interviews held, and where necessary vetting is undertaken.”
