Residents urged to boil water following suspected contamination

Boiling is a very simple method of water disinfection.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality has warned consumers in Sebokeng Zone 7 and Palm Springs of suspected contamination of the water supply system in these areas.

According to a statement issued by the Emfuleni Local Municipality during the Easter Weekend, technicians are suspecting s collapsed sewer pipeline in one of these areas as the cause of drinking water contamination.

The local municipality said a water team has been dispatched to establish the source of contamination and to assess weather the health of affected consumers are at risk.

In the meantime, consumers in Zone 7 and Palm Springs have been requested to boil tap water before using it.

Bring the water to the boil, let it boil for three minutes, and let it cool before using it. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water,” Emfuleni said in a statement.

Emfuleni said affected consumers would be advised of any new developments as they occur.

*Later during the Easter Weekend the Emfuleni Local Municipality said that work to normalize supply in the Evaton area continues.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality Water Service Unit, Metsi-a-Lekoa jointly with Rand Water have made significant progress in unblocking sewer manholes suspected of being the source of contamination. The teams have taken additional water samples since Thursday (28 March 2024) and the results have improved.”

Notwithstanding the progressive laboratory results, consumers at Beverley Hills, Sonder Water, Graceland, Lakeside, Zone 3, Zone 6, Zone 8, Small Farms, Evaton, Evaton North and West are notified that the water is still not safe for consumption. The municipality continues to urge affected consumers to avoid using tap water for consumption and to boil it before use,” Emfuleni said.
