‘Extremely jealous’ eighteen-year-old denied bail for assault, death threats against girlfriend

An 18-year-old has been denied bail for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend of three years and threatening to kill her and their 5-month-old baby.

The accused, Lerato Segoto is alleged to have made death threats and assaulted his girlfriend after she broke up with him in Itumeleng Street in Sarafina on 9 May. The community had to stop Lerato after it is alleged that he pointed his uncle’s firearm at her, refusing to accept her rejection. He is allegedly extremely jealous and couldn’t face her being around other men. Segoto appeared before Makgaola Foso in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on 14 May. He warned her to drop the charges or he would kill her. The magistrate did not take the threat lightly. Before deciding whether or not to grant bail the magistrate issued certain conditions. The accused is forbidden to make any contact, either directly or indirectly, with the woman and must find alternative accommodation outside Potchefstroom until the case has been finalised. The defence attorney provided an alternative address in Rustenburg, where the accused will be staying with his other uncle.

Foso postponed the bail application to 21 May in order for the police to verify the address.
