How to create a felt heart craft for Mother’s Day

With these simple steps, you and your child can create a beautiful and heartfelt gift just in time for Mother's Day.

While there are plenty of Mother’s Day gift options available in the market, nothing beats the warmth and love that comes from a handmade gift. One great idea that you can create with your child is a felt heart adorned with colourful buttons.

What you need

  • Templates (see the bottom of this post)
  • Red felt
  • Red sewing thread
  • Assorted red buttons
  • A mini ribbon bow and matching sewing thread
  • White embroidery thread (floss)
  • White narrow ribbon
  • Toy stuffing
  • Sewing scissors
  • Sewing needles and pins

Method

  1. First, use a heart template (there are lots available online) to cut out two heart shapes from red felt.
  2. Next, lay out the buttons on one heart and sew them onto the other heart shape. Smaller and lighter buttons work best for this, and be sure to sew them on securely with several stitches of double-thickness red thread.
  3. Once the buttons are attached, add a mini bow with a few stitches in the centre, and attach it to the silver bow with white thread.
  4. After the decorations are in place, cut a 15cm (6 inch) length of narrow white ribbon and fold it into a loop.
  5. Sew the ends to the top of the undecorated heart shape with whip stitch and red sewing thread, sewing into the felt but not through it.
  6. Then, place the front and back heart pieces together so that the ribbon ends are sandwiched between the two layers, and the loop sticks out above the bow. Hold or pin the two heart pieces together and blanket stitch around the edge, using half strands of white embroidery thread. Stitch most of the way around, folding the bow forward as you sew behind it, and leave a gap for stuffing. Be sure to start stitching at one side so that the gap for stuffing is along a straight edge.
  7. Finally, add small pieces of stuffing to gradually fill the heart, stuffing it lightly so that it is evenly filled but still very squishy. Then, sew up the gap with more blanket stitches and finish your stitching neatly at the back.
