Flutter into fun with this leaf butterfly craft

Making a butterfly from a dry leaf and modelling clay is a fun and creative activity your child will love. 

Materials

• A dry leaf
• Modelling clay 
• Scissors
• A toothpick or a pin
• Glue (optional)

How to make it

1. Find a dry leaf. It’s best to use a leaf with a long stem and two points at the end, which will be the butterfly’s wings. If the leaf is too brittle, you can moisten it with a damp cloth and then lay it flat between two pieces of paper until it dries.
2. Take a small piece of modelling clay and roll it into a ball. Then, shape it into an oval or cigar shape, which will be the butterfly’s body. Make sure to keep the leaf’s stem intact, as this will be the butterfly’s body and legs.
3. Take another piece of modelling clay and flatten it into a thin sheet. Place the flattened clay over the leaf, making sure to cover the leaf completely. Press down on the clay with your fingers to make it adhere to the leaf. Then, use your fingers to shape the clay into two wing shapes. Make sure to keep the leaf’s points intact, as this will give the butterfly its wing shape.
4. Take a toothpick or pin and make a small hole in the centre of each wing. Then, gently insert the toothpick or pin into the butterfly’s body, ensuring it goes through both the body and the wings. This will hold the wings in place and give the butterfly a 3D effect.
