The REAL Vaal River monster…

Stonehaven-on-Vaal's owner, Rosemary Cloete-Anderson's vivid childhood memories of a night, 34 years ago

Rex and Rosemary Anderson, owners of Stonehaven-on-Vaal, one of the loveliest garden terrace restaurants in the country, have a longstanding connection with this awesome public venue on the edge of the Vaal River.

Rosemary grew up at Stonehaven – her family home – and later, in collaboration with husband Rex, developed Stonehaven into a very popular, superbly managed public venue.

Although many residents jokingly refer to what they believe is a fictitious Vaal River monster, they don’t know how close to the truth they are, says Rosemary.
“There has been a “river monster” there ever since I was a child growing up at Stonehaven.
I “saw” it on one occasion – extensive major water movement and serious sound one night about 34 years ago – there were 4 of us at the Stonehaven sitting on the river bank at the time and we were all seriously freaked out!

“The fable believed by local folk when I was a child was that this river monster was controlled by my father – hence not one theft/robbery while he was alive.”

Cheers! :-)
