ELM replaces sewer lines in Vereeniging

Technicians anticipate completing the remaining pipe installations this month, October.

VEREENIGING.- The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), through its Infrastructure Planning Development (IPD) department, is busy replacing a gravity sewer line in Merriman and Lewis Avenue in Vereeniging.

The two lines connect to a main sewer pipeline in Union Street.

The mandatory project aimed at improving the reliability of the sewer reticulation system in Vereeniging started in November 2022. Provided that all goes well, the municipality said that technicians anticipate completing the remaining pipe installations this month, October.

The ELM said that its water unit, Metsi-a-Lekoa, also had an operation and maintenance project to replace a collapsed main sewer line to address sewer spillages in Vereeniging Central and Extension 2. The collapsed pipeline at the corner of Voortrekker Street and Lewis Avenue connects to a part of Union Street.

“The pipe was triumphantly replaced in 4 weeks. The team has completed backfilling and is now busy with roadworks. Metsi-a-Lekoa is in talks with IPD to synchronise recommissioning of the sewer line in Union Street. This is to minimise the inconvenience of consumers serviced by the gravity line,” said ELM’s Chuchi Radebe.
