Mandela Day: Mediclinic Vereeniging reaches out to little ones

Mediclinic believes social responsibility initiatives allow us to better understand and engage with our community. Mandela Month provides a timely opportunity to give back to the community and honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy through acts of kindness and community service. Previously, Mediclinic Vereeniging donated non-perishable food items to Tshepong Care Centre in the spirit of Ubuntu. A drive involving all departments was organised, and the employee participation and enthusiasm were incredible.
This year, Mediclinic Vereeniging honoured a request from Stepping Stone Nursery School in Vereeniging, which services nearly 90 kids from previously disadvantaged communities in Sasol, Orange Farm, Sebokeng, and Vereeniging. The principal, Mrs Joyce Selepe Mofokeng approached Mediclinic to support the school with a new first aid kit to ensure they could manage any small medical emergency.
We honour the responsibility given to us as a nation by Nelson Mandela in these words: “Children are the most vulnerable section of society. Any society that does not care for its children is no nation at all.” With the winter season upon us and many children in crèches, the risk of infection is high. For the Infection and Prevention Control (ICP) Manager, Nicci Ferreira, and one of our nursing students, George Maluke, this was an excellent opportunity to educate the children on hand hygiene and the importance of covering their coughs to prevent transmission of illnesses with fun and simple interaction.
If a child becomes sick, paediatricians play an important role in the health and wellbeing of children. They prevent, detect and manage physical, behavioural and developmental issues. Pediatricians specialise in treating children with specific health conditions. Mediclinic Vereeniging is home to paediatricians such as Dr Voges, Dr Nhlapo, Dr Phelps, and Dr Tabiri.
