VEREENIGING – The police disposed of 17 247 litres of alcohol that was confiscated in the Sedibeng District.

The liquor was disposed of at the Leeukuil Water Treatment Plant in Sharpeville on Friday.

Overseeing the disposal, the police’s Deputy District Commissioner of Sedibeng, Brigadier Nkhwashu explained that the liquor was seized from illegal operators.

“The liquor that we have confiscated are the generators of crime and we felt it necessary to destroy this liquor, before the liquor destroys our future and the future of our children,” Nkhwashu said.

“The country’s future is being destroyed by among other things, the abuse of liquor, mainly because it is legal to drink and to use liquor in our country,” he added.

According to Nkhwashu liquor often leads to gender-based violence and femicide.

“Liquor is being abused, and therefore we have a need to regulate its use in our society.”

According to Nkhwashu the liquor that was disposed of relates to cases that have gone to court and have been finalised.
