Until now the Hawks – the elite crime busters – have refused to name the suspects arrested in a swoop on Wednesday, which saw them visit the Gupta family home in the leafy suburb of Saxonworld, in Johannesburg.
The Mail & Guardian is reporting that there is a police manhunt underway for Duduzane Zuma and Atul Gupta, who are reportedly on the run. However, despite media speculation the Gupta brothers and Duduzane Zuma are not named in the indictment as accused persons.
Court papers list a plethora of charges and 11 accused persons and companies that include Mbana Peter Thabethe, Seipate Dlamini, Takisi Janiki Masiteng, Estina the company, Kamal Vasram, Oakbay investments, Ashu Chalwa, Nazeem Howa, Varun Gupta, Ronica Ragavan and Aerohaven (Pty) Ltd.
Gupta brothers – Ajay, Atul and Rajesh, who are close associates of Zuma and his son, Duduzane have previously been accused of using undue influence to persuade top government officials to award their companies lucrative contracts.
As many as five people were arrested and two others were expected to hand themselves over before the court appearance.
The court matter is understood to be linked to a Free State government dairy project awarded to the company Estina‚ under which the dodgy Gupta-linked Vrede Dairy farm project was conducted. Millions of rand meant for poverty alleviation are thought to have been siphoned off and partly used to fund a lavish Gupta wedding.
