With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Musona’s predatory skills prevailed at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The Zimbabwean international netted his two goals in the last five minutes of the Absa Premiership encounter. His first was after substitute striker Katlego Mphela neatly laid the ball for him for the nippy player to burst into the Ajax area with
some great ball control to shoot past the Urban Warriors goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola.
Musona’s second also involved another substitute. This time it was left winger George Lebese who sent in a cross which the former PSL top goalscorer score with a glancing header.
The brace has taken his goal tally to eight in the league two short of current leading goal scorer and team-mate Bernard Parker who has 10 goals to his name.
In truth, Chiefs dominated this clash as they had entered the Polokwane venue with a three point difference from second placed Mamelodi Sundowns.
After last night’s win, Amakhosi now are now six point ahead of Sundowns. They are on 49 points after 22 games while Sundowns have managed to collect 43 points from the same number of matches as Chiefs.
Ajax looked like they could salvage a goalless draw in this game but their defensive strategy backfired on them.
They sat back for the greater part of the game hoping to catch Chiefs on a counter but the plan did not work.
It was only the combination of substitutes in Eleazar Rodgers and Cecil Lolo who threatened Reyaad Pieterse, who is holding fort for injured Itumeleng Khune, but nothing came out of that opportunity.
The only misgiving from the match was the stretching off of Chiefs striker Mphela after clash with a Ajax player.
Mphela did not come back to the field as the first aid personnel stretched him off to the change rooms.
It was not clear what injury the former Bafana Bafana player suffered.
Meanwhile, in other PSL matches last night Maritzburg United drew 1-1 against Bloemfontein Celtic.
AmaZulu beat Polokwane City 1-0 at home at Princess Magogo Stadium and University of Pretoria and Bidvest Wits drew 0-0 in Pretoria.
