Along with Ebay, iTunes and Amazon – the top three international online destinations – these companies have a few things in common.
They are ‘direct retailers’ that offer convenient and accessible online shopping in ‘non-fresh’ items with safe payment methods for customers, the latest PWC Total Retail Survey shows.
“These multi-channel retailers are showing significant revenue growth (approximately 30%) from online shopping alone,” said John Wilkinson, retail and consumer industry leader at PwC.
The survey report says South African online shoppers are employed full-time, between the ages of 25-34 and 53% are women. Gauteng residents place the most online orders.
The number of new online shoppers has increased by 45% in the last two years.
The PC is the dominating device for purchases. Consumers use technology predominately to check competitive prices and for payment purposes.
When it comes to online shopping 61% of SA consumers are worried about the security of their personal data.
“With cybercrime and credit card theft on the rise, retailers who wish to tap into this market should ensure cyber data security and trust,” said Wilkinson.
