Easter fun with safeguards built in

Members of the Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) will be stationed at the Rand Show at Nasrec in Johannesburg for the duration of the event from April 18 to April 28.

Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the EMS, police and members of the SA National Defence Force would ensure the safety of people at the event, which celebrates 120 years of expo expertise this year.

“We will have an exhibition at the Rand Show where people will be informed about what EMS does,” said Mulaudzi.

SA National Defence Force (SANDF) spokesperson Brigadier Xolani Mabanga said the services would occupy the Nasrec arena for four days to demonstrate the capabilities of the army, navy, air force and health services.

“We will do capability demonstrations that simulate the manoeuvres used in real battle situations, precision marching drills and action-filled scenario demonstrations. We will also showcase the latest technologies and job opportunities,” said Mabanga.

“This is a great opportunity for the people of South Africa to have first-hand experience of SANDF equipment, as we celebrate our 100-year participation of the military in the Rand Show.”

An array of activities has been lined up for visitors to the event, including stunt-car drivers from Italy, a winter wonderland of snow with the country’s longest-ever indoor ice toboggan slide and truck-loads of beach sand.

At Wemmer Pan, south of the city, more than 160 000 visitors are expected to attend this year’s Lusito Land festival from April 25 to May 4.

Festival spokesperson Suzy de Lima said that security, disaster management, EMS, Metro police, environmental health department representatives, the SA Police Service and highly trained medics would be on site to ensure the safety of visitors.

Musicians Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels, Micasa, Kurt Darren, Prime Circle, Matthew Mole, Crash Car Burn and LCNVL are scheduled to perform.

Splashy Fen, the country’s longest-running music festival, will be held from April 17 to April 21 on a farm near Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal.

In Naboomspruit, Limpopo, the Naboom Fiesta offer activities in the form of a haunted house, shooting, climbing, catapults, a laughing competition and an auction on April 19.
