How to make microwave puffy paint

This homemade puffy paint recipe is easy to make with just four ingredients: self-rising flour, salt, water, and food colouring.

Does your child enjoy painting? Puffy paint is a fun sensory project for preschoolers. Best of all, it only requires four ingredients.

What you need

  • Self-raising flour
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Food colouring

How to make it

  1. Combine equal parts self-raising flour and salt.
  2. Slowly drizzle in a small amount of water and combine. You want the paint to be able to dribble off a spoon. Continue to add water until you reach the desired paint consistency.
  3. Help your child add in a few drops of food colouring.
  4. Let your child paint patterns or basic designs on a piece of cardboard.
  5. Microwave your child’s artwork for 20-30 seconds (timing will vary for different microwaves). Let your child watch as the paint puffs out!
