Inhlambululo art exhibition open to the public

“It is personal to me because the photos were taken at my home."

On Saturday, the Springs Art Gallery hosted the launch of Simphiwe Majozi’s debut solo exhibition, Inhlambululo.
“It is personal to me because the photos were taken at my home. When you start, you don’t really know what the outcome is going to be,” said Majozi.
In the exhibit, the photographer expresses his ongoing cultural beliefs and practices through photography.
The work explores the IsiZulu tradition of Inhlambululo, whereby clothing and other items of significance are passed down to specific members of the family after the death of a relative.

These inherited belongings act as channels for communication between the living and the dead.
Born in Daveyton, Majozi believes that art plays a vital role in the community
“Art gives at different mediums through which to express ourselves. It also inspires hope. I believe that there are so many stories that need to be told through art from ekasi,” he added.

This exhibition runs until July 30.

Majozi participated in the Ekurhuleni Art Development Programme, and in 2018 was part of the student exhibition Beyond Teaching II at the Springs Art Gallery and Art Goes Beyond Teaching II at Bodutu Art Gallery at the Vaal University of Technology.
He completed a foundation course at the Market Photo Workshop in 2018, and in 2019 he joined a six-month narrative course at Through The Lens Collective, where he developed the body of work Inhlambululo.
