Tsakani library renamed

Tsakani – New Tsakani Library was renamed Mpho Rahab Molepo Library during an official ceremony on Tuesday.
Molepo was a community activist who was among leading women who participated in the pass law resistance march held in Pretoria in 1956.
In 1965, she was placed under house arrest for her involvement in the liberation struggle.
The renaming of the local library is part of the City of Ekurhuleni’s initiative to rename geographical facilities, major roads and libraries.

Speaking at the event, Ekurhuleni MMC for Health and Social Development, Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and customer relations management Nomadlozi Nkosi said the renaming of landmark features will bring honour and pride to residents of Ekurhuleni.
“Through this initiative the history and legacy of the leaders who gave their all for an equal society will live on.
“We want young people to celebrate these people and know what they stood for,” she said.

Frank Molepo, brother of Mpho, said it is an honour that his sister’s hard work has been recognised.
“My sister was always ready to fight for the truth to ensure that people had access to services.
“She played a key role in the formation of ward committees and street structures.

“She didn’t only belong to the Molepo family but to the community of Tsakani at large.
“We were happy when the mayor of Ekurhuleni informed the family during her memorial ceremony that a landmark will be named after her.
“Now that this promise has come to life we know she will forever be remembered,” he said.
