Police find three unlicensed firearms during roadside operation

One suspect flees and Tsakani police nab three

On Saturday, Tsakani police, in a joint operation with the SANDF and Gautrans, arrested three men for possession of unlicensed firearms.

The operation was aimed at enforcing Level 3 lockdown restrictions (curfew) and general crime prevention.

According to Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu, spokesperson for Tsakani SAPS, officers stopped a silver Ford Fiesta with four occupants at 10.30pm at Huhlwane Street in Ext 15.

As soon as the vehicle stopped one passenger jumped out and ran away.The three remaining occupants were searched.

Mngomezulu says the officers discovered cash the men couldn’t account for.

Three unlicensed firearms and 24 rounds of ammunition were also found in their possession.

Other arrests were made during the operation for contravening the Disaster Management Act.

Tsakani SAPS station commander Col Johannes Maass welcomed the arrests.

He appealed to the community to adhere to the regulations set out for the period of Level 3 in order to fight Covid -19.
