KeamogetsweM Foundation uses 67 minutes to address food insecurity

Young people doing their bit to curb food insecurity during Mandela Month

Keamogetswe M Foundation took to the streets of Kwa-Thema in commemoration of Mandela Day to do what they do best.

The NPO distributed food packs on Saturday and has been working tirelessly to help the community deal with food insecurity created by the Covid-19 lockdown.

“Working in the community for the past five months has posed difficult questions to the initiative.

“It is humbling to attest that through our past food donation drives we have successfully reached more than 300 families across Kwa-Thema and other parts of Ekurhuleni.

“We don’t believe that needy families should be fed or given food occasionally, but it is our responsibility to create sustainable systems that will make sure that they are fed on a daily basis,” explains Keamogetswe Masike, founder of the NPO.

The Covid-19 pandemic is a health and humanitarian crisis threatening food security and the nutrition of millions of people around the world.

Many people were already suffering from hunger and malnutrition before the virus hit.

“Food banks are closing down due to constraints.

“The greatest question that lies before us is

“What about the poor?

The organisation has been working tirelessly to help the community deal with food insecurity created by the Covid-19 lockdown.

“How are they going to survive with price hikes, inadequate health care, job losses and salary cuts?

“Our organisation is under pressure because we are getting calls from people asking for food and other basic needs.

“But what we have is not enough to feed everyone and our call for assistance from the public and private business did not yield much results.

“We are still calling for assistance.”

Keamogetswe would like to extend a hand of appreciation to the SAPS and CPF patrollers of Kwa-Thema for assisting with a well coordinated distribution process.

“We live and find comfort in the principles, ethics and legacy of the most inspiring man in the world, Nelson Mandela.

“He left behind an indelible legacy of love.

“In him we learn the ideals of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.

“Our sacrifice for today was in commemoration of 67 minutes of giving back,” he adds.

Keamogetswe believes we can all make our communities a safe environment.

“Volunteer with your family at a shelter or soup kitchen.

“Build relationships with your neighbors and check how they survive on a daily basis.
