Striders challenge men to help raise awareness on GBV

Kwa-Thema Striders recently launched the ‘Lockdown Gender-Base Violence Virtual Challenge’ to raise awareness while keeping fit.

In the month of July, the club is challenging all male members to dedicate 150km run to raise awareness of GBV.

Tshepo Mahlangu, the club’s secretary, says they needed to take a stand and lead the community.

“We have noticed that there is a huge surge in the number of reported cases of domestic violence, especially during the national lockdown.”

He says the club believes that such behaviour is unacceptable.

The slogan is ‘Stand up and speak out, say no to women and child abuse.’

“We have female runners in the club and we train in the morning at around 5am.

“We want to live in a community where they feel safe.

“But as things are they can’t even do what they love because of fear.

“They don’t want to be victims of a senseless attack.

“This cannot be happening.”
