Must watch petrolhead documentaries on Youtube

With just over a week to go before lockdown is over, or so we hope, we have been hard at work searching the internet to find the best entertainment for those petrolheads out there and we have thankfully found some interesting documentaries which don’t require a subscription to a streaming service, these can be found on YouTube.

2020 Porsche 911 992 Documentary

DPCcars has released a 90 minute Porsche development documentary on YouTube and we feel that it is worth a watch. Sure, a 10 minute YouTube video can be considered a bit long these days but this is no ordinary vlog style video. This is, however, no normal documentary-style video, there is, in fact, no consistent narration. This video is made up of B-roll footage laced together to take you into the development process of the latest Porsche 911. For example, instead of someone overloading your brain with big words about the suspension and traction control system, you get a few minutes of actually seeing the car on a track being put through various tests. You will also see some cold-weather testing, and hot weather testing as well as testing of various other 911 components. Everything from the clay model to the finished car can be seen with minimal explanation and we love it.

Ford GT: The Return to Le Mans

Following the massive success of the recent Ford vs Ferrari movie, Ford Motor Company has released a 78-minute documentary which we found on YouTube which takes you behind the scenes of its return to Le Mans. This documentary tells the entire story with first-person interviews of everyone from designers and engineers to the racing drivers themselves about the long and challenging road to crossing the finishing line at the infamous racing circuit. The video starts by diving into the history of Ford’s racing and the reasons why it raced in Le Mans in 1960. Fast forward nearly five decades, and Ford decided to return to Le Mans to repeat that performance for the victory’s 50th anniversary. The story, however, shows the rawness of a project like this, depicting the team’s low points in an emotional style. This needs to be added to your watch list.

Fassbender’s Road To Le Mans Porsche Documentary

Staying with Le Mans, Porsche has also released a short documentary which has been split into a few episodes where Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender attempts to race at Le Mans however the road to get to the starting grid is long and challenging. The German actor undertakes a monumental task with Porsche. Fassbender is no armature however having taken part in various races before, some even backed y Ferrari, however racing at Le Mans is not easy and the series follows his development, his ups and his downs. You see the rawness of racing. Add this series to your YouTube list.

ENDURANCE: The Documentary about Porsche at the Two Toughest GT Races in the World.

Another YouTube must. This video follows the Porsche GT Motorsport team as well as its customer teams from Le Mans, one of the toughest motorsport races on the calendar to the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife just one week later during the 2019 championship series. These two events push drivers, teams and all involved to the limits. The documentary gives you a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes, it is beautifully shot yet still portrays the grit, the challenges, the ups and the downs. This 90-minute documentary cannot be skipped.
