VWSA reaches 200 000 units with Polo

Volkswagen Group South Africa has been locally producing Polos since 1996 although the latest iteration wearing the Polo moniker only made its appearance in 2018 on the local production line.

VWSA achieved a milestone on the 6th of September when the 200 000th Polo rolled of the production line at the Uitenhage production plant. This achievement adds to the total of 1 053 600 Polo vehicles that have been manufactured in South Africa since 1994. Out of the 200 000 vehicles, 110 265 of the latest Polos were manufactured in between January and August 2019, this includes the Polo, Polo Vivo and Polo GTI derivatives. Most of the vehicles were destined for export with 153 582 units leaving South African shores while 46 418 units remained for the local market.

While VWSA services all the right-hand drive markets worldwide with the new Polo, the local manufacturing plant also supplement the production of left-hand-drive Polos for European markets. The recent achievement confirms the validity of the Exporter of the Year award given by Exporters Eastern Cape to VWSA which is the third time the manufacturer has won the award.

“This milestone could not have been achieved without the dedication of our employees. Our success, both locally and overseas, benefits our workforce and the local economy. We intend to keep achieving these milestones and contributing to the economy of Nelson Mandela Bay,” Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa Chairman and Managing Director.
