The new Kwid on the block

The Renault Kwid is a popular choice in the new vehicle market and since its introduction in November 2016 and has managed to climb the ranks to take third place in the 10 best-selling cars in South Africa. Potentially adding to the value proposition is the addition of ABS brakes and a smarter infotainment system. While the quirky little car didn’t receive any updates on the exterior since its debut in 2016, the interior on all derivatives now come standard with a driver-side airbag.

The drive

The Renault Kwid proudly occupies the entry-level hatchback segment and offers value for money considering its price tag. That being said, the Kwid will appeal to parents buying their children their first car and people leaving public transport in their past and commuting to their place of work on their terms. The 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine coupled to the 5-speed manual gearbox producing 50 kW and developing 91 N.m of torque will certainly provide enough power to achieve this task, I will admit, it is quite punchy of the line. It is, however, when you start driving it on the national routes where things get interesting, although the little Renault managed to achieve the national speed limit with little effort, the road and engine noise can become quite irritating on longer journeys. In addition to the noise, the steering does not inspire confidence at higher speeds, a result of the thin little wheels.

The interior

To combat the road and engine noise, the Kwid sees the addition of an infotainment system which supports Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The 7.0-inch screen multi-media system also allows for Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free telephony, USB and AUX input ports. A characteristic I enjoyed is the speakers which are fitted close to the windscreen on top of facia instead of in the door lining. Another addition to the interior is the driver side airbag which now comes standard on all the derivatives. While the facia shares modern design cues from its more premium siblings in the Renault range, one does notice that the materials used are made for durability rather than luxurious finish.

Verdict

The French automaker has created a stylish solution to those entering the world of car ownership. Now with the updated infotainment system and added safety features, the Kwid provides an even more complete package. The little commuter provided an entertaining, safe and fuel-efficient trip every day. Taking into consideration the pricing on the latest iteration, it is an option to consider for those looking for a reliable alternative to public transport or the outdated ‘hand me down’ vehicle.

Warranty

The Renault Kwid comes standard with a 5-year/150 000km mechanical warranty and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty, a 2-year service plan, with services scheduled at 15 000km intervals.
