Celebrating the youth of Ekurhuleni through performing arts

The Ekurhuleni Sports Heritage Recreation Arts and Culture (SHRAC) department’s performing arts division had a theatre day on Saturday as part of the youth month celebrations.

The Ekurhuleni Sports Heritage Recreation Arts and Culture (SHRAC) department’s performing arts division hosted a theatre day on Saturday as part of the youth month celebrations.

The theatre day was to showcase the talent that Ekurhuleni had and four groups participated.

The groups came from Ekurhuleni North in Tembisa, from Ekurhuleni South in Katlehong and two from Ekurhuleni East in Tsakane and Daveyton.

Dalton Vusi Mdaka from the performing arts division says: “We had the auditions in May going from region to region, and the top four groups will be performing today.

“All these groups will leave with the same prize as they are all winners.

“However, we’ve got two people who’ll be in the audience.

“They are going to select the best performing group.

“We are in talks with different theatres – the Germiston Theatre, Market Theatre, Soweto Theatre, State Theatre and more – to allow them to get a slot to perform a series.”

Mdaka says the artists will be equipped with skills ranging from being a stage manager to a director.

“Most people don’t take the arts industry seriously, so we are trying to make sure the youth are informed about the spaces they can explore to showcase their talents without fear,” says Mdaka.

An actor and dancer of the Karabelo House and Entertainment from Katlehong, Tankiso Sebabolle, says: “I decided to become an artist because I believe it is my calling, nothing more.

“I just love being a performer.”

Shain Sibanyoni, a director of the Twinplugs from Tsakane, says: “We call ourselves the Twinplugs because we connect the community through performing arts.

“We deal with musical theatre and we practice at the Tsakane Centre.

“For those who would like to join us, we hold auditions twice every year and they can contact me on 074 370 7870 to find out when we’ll be having auditions again.”

Flowers of the Nation from Daveyton won the main prize.

They will get a slot to perform at the Germiston theatre and other theatres.
