Foundation celebrates Freedom Day with dance

Amy-Jane Labuschagne, in the 20 years and over category, won first place silver level in hip-hop, second place in jazz, first place in intermediate level disco, second place in silver level salsa and second place in silver level Latin.

 

The South African Dance Foundation (SADF) held its yearly Freedom Day dance competition at the Springs Civic Centre on Saturday.

Belinda van Tonder of the SADF says: “There were 195 participants.

“The competition has been going on for quite some time and Springs Civic Centre is one of the two halls we use for this competition.”

Mariska Wolmarans of Dance Directions says: “The dance competition is open for different dance styles.

“My dancers have entered for disco, bhangra, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, solo, Latin and salsa. I am hoping that my dancers win in the categories.”

The Dance Direction dancers were impressive.

Amy-Jane Labuschagne, in the 20 years and over category, won first place silver level in hip-hop, second place in jazz, first place in intermediate level disco, second place in silver level salsa and second place in silver level Latin.

Hope Bailey, in the nine- to 11-years beginner level category, won second place in jazz, second place in contemporary, fourth place in disco, fourth place in bhangra, fourth place in hip-hop and second place in hip-hop duo.

Chrishe de Lange, in the 12- to 15-years category, came fifth place bronze level in hip-hop and fifth place silver level in contemporary.

Jacky van Staden, in the 22 years and over silver level category, won third place in Latin and came sixth in salsa.

Kellen Meyer, in the 12- to 15-years category, won first place in beginner level hip-hop.

Jess Meyer, in the 12- to 15-years category, won beginner level second place in hip-hop.

Jessica Smit, in the seven- to nine-years category, won first place newcomer level hip-hop and second place beginner level hip-hop duo.
