New exhibition at the Springs Art Gallery

The exhibition features photographs inspired by scenes relating to the life and legacy of Chris Hani and the Triple H campaign.

The New Breed exhibition was officially launched at the Springs Art Gallery on Saturday afternoon by MMC for Community Services Councillor Dora Mlambo.

The exhibition features photographs inspired by scenes relating to the life and legacy of Chris Hani and the Triple H campaign.

The Triple H campaign highlights the progress made by the metro in housing, health and hunger relief.

Students from around Ekurhuleni received photography lessons at the KwaThema Library and those 13 students showcased their work at the gallery on Saturday.

Speaking at the launch, Mlambo says the exhibition gave students the opportunity to examine this campaign from various points of view using photography as a medium of expression and communication.

“Ekurhuleni is a host to an abundance of talented creatives in need of proper paltforms to expand their artistic knowledge.

“The programme is designed to serve as an educational event as well as providing a creative outlet for students to engage with and get to know their history.

“Through the exhibition, it is hoped our photography students will connect with the viewers on an emotional and personal level, open both external and internal dialogues, create an awareness and promote the role of leaders, particularly Chris Hani in the struggle for freedom,” says Mlambo.

Also at the exhibition was activist and visual artist Zanele Muholi who encouraged students to keep challenging themselves and consider photography as a career.

“Photography is another way to archive South Africa and you are speaking on behalf of those who don’t have a voice or who have been silenced,” says Muholi.

The exhibition will run until midday on June 30.
