ESDA management says proper procedures were followed with closure of frail care centre

The ESDA management has responded and says the closure comes after the Board of Trustees informed the ESDA Management Committee of the unfortunate news that the Northern Conference Development Trust (NCDT) will no longer be funding the organisation from March 1.

Last week The Addie reported on the closure of the ESDA Frail Care Centre, which will be shutting down on May 31.

This came as a shock to residents who have family members at the centre.

ESDA management has responded and says the closure comes after the Board of Trustees informed the ESDA Management Committee of the unfortunate news that the Northern Conference Development Trust (NCDT) will no longer be funding the organisation from March 1.

“Despite attempts to fund the centre through the generosity of sponsorships, it has become abundantly clear that it would not be financially viable to provide the same level of care and service to its residents as the NCDT also finds itself in substantial financial difficulty.

“In accordance with the provision of ESDA’s Constitution, a notice was circulated to all the members of ESDA’s Management Committee, notifying them of a special general meeting 21 days prior to the meeting, which was held on March 14.

“At the aforementioned meeting, two-thirds of the members present voted by secret ballot in favour of closing down the centre and the decision was therefore compliant with the provisions of the ESDA Constitution.

“On March 20, 2019, a letter was distributed to all residents of the centre and their family members to inform them of the aforementioned decision and that all residents will have to find alternative accommodation before May 31 when ESDA will officially be closed down,” says management.

Management says they have taken the reasonable care necessary in order to comply with all the provisions of the Nursing Act 33 of 2005, Older Persons Act 13 of 2006 and the Non-profit Organisations Act 71 of 2000.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their unfaltering support throughout the years and for the substantial role it played in assisting ESDA to provide a place of refuge for those in need.

“Throughout the years ESDA has welcomed countless residents with open arms and as the day now comes that it has to close its doors those arms will remain available in the form of a helping hand in order to assist the residents of the centre while they find their new homes during this transitional period, all the while being reminded they will always be part of the ESDA family,” says management.
