Street dance competition keeps youths off the streets

Youth partakes in street dance competition.

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, in partnership with the arts and culture Ward 72 committee leaders, took to the streets of Payneville to have a street dance competition for the school holidays.

This is an initiative to keep the children off the streets and to keep them busy with partaking in activities that are safe and fun.

Likhaka group graced the stage with their traditional singing and dancing.

The dance competition took place on Tuesday and was open to youth of all ages, both male and female, within region E in the east of Johannesburg.

There were different types of dances, including traditional, pantsula, hip-hop, contemporary, sbujwa and many more performed.

The competition was for more than just dancing as there were some rapping and singing that took place to ensure that it was an all-inclusive experience.

There were a number of groups that took part in the competition and taking part was as easy as registering and exhibiting your talent.

The prizes were all cash prizes – the first prize was R1 500, the second prize was R1 000 and the third prize was R500.

Each group or individual, whether in the top three or not, received a certificate for their participation to remind them that they are all winners.

The funding for this initiative is part of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation’s budget, says Salome Phala from the department.

The crowd came out in numbers to support the performers.

There were crowds of supporters to cheer all the performers on and community members felt it was a great way to keep the youth from doing things that would land them in trouble.

The winners were Tsunami Art Production in the first place, second place was awarded to V.S.Y.C Kofifi and in third place was Olwethu Youth Club. Congratulations to all the winners and everybody who took part.
