Ourique wins big at the South African Championships of Performing Arts

Ourique shines as a solo performer.

Daniel Ourique (16), won ten gold medals and two silver medals when he competed in the South African Championships of Performing Arts.

The championships took place from 30 March to April 7.

Daniel took part in nine solo dance items and three group items, across a wide variety of dance styles including cha-cha, samba, jive, contemporary, freestyle, hip-hop, ethnic/folkloric dance, lyrical and an open item.

According to Ourique’s mother, Maria, Daniel has been dancing since he was a baby.

“He would move his foot in time to the music before he could even walk.”

Daniel has been interested in dancing from a young age and would accompany his mother as she went line dancing.

His formal dancing lessons started when he was in Grade Two. He has been training with his teacher Nicole du Plessis for the past 10 years.

Daniel is no stranger to this competition as he has competed in it for the past four years.

“I’m very happy that I won; I’m proud of myself.

“I felt relieved when I won because I can now set new goals for myself,” says Daniel.

When he is not dancing, Daniel plays rugby and cricket for his school, Hoerskool Hugenote, and enjoys playing his Xbox and going out with friends.

Daniel’s win at the South African Championships of Performing Arts means he has qualified to represent South Africa at the Dance World Cup which is being held in Barcelona later this year.

This will be his third time competing internationally and Daniel wants to bring home the gold medal.

In future, Daniel wants to study dance in England, so he can dance professionally and become a choreographer when he is older.
