DVD review: The Snowman

This chilling line is spoken by detective Harry Hole in the suspenseful crime thriller The Snowman and it accurately sums up the modus operandi of the cold-blooded killer he is after.
When a woman mysteriously disappears during the first snowfall of winter, Harry – a hard-drinking maverick detective – joins the investigation to help try and find her.
As the case continues, several bodies start to emerge and Harry realises they are all connected.
With the help of Katrine Bratt, a brilliant recruit, Harry digs up several cold cases which he believes are related to their current investigation.
As winter sets in and the snow continues to fall, Harry and Katrine find themselves chasing several leads in their effort to track down the killer – dubbed The Snowman because of the creepy-looking snowmen he builds as a calling card – before he can kill again.
Directed by Tomas Alfredson and based on the bestseller by Norwegian crime-writer Jo Nesbø, The Snowman features a strong cast, including the versatile Val Kilmer who, despite the recent media reports about his battle with cancer, proves once again what a consummate actor he is.

Despite receiving a frosty reception from critics, The Snowman has all the elements of a good whodunnit crime thriller – a slightly convoluted plot, a cast of obvious (and not so obvious) suspects, several twists and turns and one or two misleading dead ends.
