Young dancer wins 13 medals at SA championships

Daniel Ourique (15), a Grade Nine learner at Hoërskool Hugenote, recently won six gold and seven silver medals in 13 dance divisions at the South African Championships of Performing Arts, held at Nasrec, in Johannesburg.

He now qualifies to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, in the United States of America, in June.

His mother, Maria, says Daniel competed in 11 solo and two group items and excelled in all styles.

The gold medals were for the solo dance styles lyrical, musical character, cha-cha, jive and samba, and in the group item, for hip-hop.

He was awarded silver medals for contemporary, ethnic, jazz, open, freestyle and hip-hop, and in the group item in the open division.

“The lyrical dance style is a routine where dancers interpret the lyrics or mood of a song,” explains Maria.

She says she loves seeing Daniel use his talent through his passionate dancing.

The teenager says he loves dancing and enjoys every competition.

“At every event there is so much to learn and so many people you meet.

“New friendships develop at every competition,” says Daniel.
