It really is very peculiar and where to start is, maybe, one of the most peculiar questions to ask.

You see the beginning isn’t really the beginning, but then neither is the bit in the middle or the chat at the end.

If you’re a tad confused don’t let that put you off watching this masterful movie from the pen of Ransom Riggs which has been turned into a script by the masterful Jane Goldman for the filming delight of Tim Burton.

This is perhaps one of my favourite Burton films and to say I am a fan is quite the understatement.

To help get you into the loop, the basic plot is this:

Jacob’s grandfather has often talked of his mysterious adventures.

In particular, he often discussed the strange kids who were part of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

The tricky part is that the school is in a time loop which is impossible to find if you, yourself, are not peculiar.

His grandfather leaves clues for Jacob to follow, which bring him to a mysterious island where he finds out that his grandfather wasn’t telling tales.

The children do exist and, as Jacob gets to know the children, he discovers they might have special powers.

To help him, Jacob must tap into his own powers, ones he didn’t know he had, to save them.

This movie is a thrill a minute with all manner of fantastical things happening – things you once believed were impossible but can’t help but believe in after watching the film.

It requires a broad imagination and a healthy ability to suspend reality, but if you are up to the challenge this is one of the best movies you’re likely to see this year.

Go on, throw caution to the wind and take a magical journey with Jacob and his fabulous new friends.
