Indian cultural concert inspires audience

Inspired by Pujya Swami Ananda of Sohum Sanctuary, Bhakti Bhav Investments, a non-profit organisation, hosted a Ustads of Africa, an Indian classical music concert at the Springs Theatre on Saturday.

“The organisation is aimed at promoting religious, cultural and social activities through multiple media such as music and dance, amongst various others, says Dipam Bhagoobhai, one of the directors of the organisation.

The organisation committee plans on making this an annual event, to motivate the youth to want to get involved in Indian classical music.

The concert was a showcase of Indian classical music exhibited in various mediums of expression such as sitar, sarod, tabla and vocals, performed by a host of seasoned local artists including Premal and Poorvi Bhana, Vevek and Rabin Ram, Vivek and Ketan Parshotam, and Madhav Parshotam, as well as Arindam Mukhopadhyay.

This was a conscious decision made by the Bhakti Bhav team to promote Indian classical music on the East Rand and attract visitors to Springs.

Through this concert, Bhakti Bhav seeks to make Indian classical music accessible to the broader community and attract people who don’t often get the opportunity to attend concerts such as these.

With a motto of serve, love and give, Dipam says the purpose of the event is to promote local musicians and to provide a platform for them.

Dipam says the evening was a huge success.

One of the aims of the organisation is to identify the needs of the community and address those needs through a host of different activities in a way that enriches the lives of individuals.

“This project celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the community and, through live performance, gives the broader community an opportunity to witness and embrace that heritage first-hand,” says Dipam.
