DVD review: Me Before You

If you're a Game of Thrones fan you'll hardly recognise Emilia Clarke (better known to GOT fans as Daenerys Targaryen) with her more natural brown hair and colourful, if somewhat odd, wardrobe.

Me Before You tells the tale of Louisa Clark, who is compelled to find a new job after being laid off from a café she had worked at for six years.

Having passed up a number of unsuitable positions, she takes a job caring for Will Traynor, a cynical former banker who was paralysed when a motorbike hit him while he was crossing the road two years prior to their meeting.

At first, he reacts coldly to her spunkiness and he treats her with contempt. However, the two begin to bond and eventually become close friends and develop feelings for each other.

Having overheard his parents talking about his intention to go to Switzerland for an assisted suicide, she embarks on a plan to fill his days with fun adventures in a bid to convince him that life is worth living, even from a wheelchair.

Having enjoyed a number of local outings, the pair and Will’s physical therapist, Nathan, enjoy their last adventure on a holiday in Mauritius.

It is there that he tells her he will be going ahead with his plan to die and asks her to go to Switzerland with him.

Based on the Jojo Moyes book of the same name, Me Before You is a light and uplifting story despite the sad overtones.

It is a sappy romance which is perfect for lazy days on the couch, and a must for the DVD collection of all romantics, but be warned – you’ll need at least one box of tissues.

Boys be warned – this is definitely a chick flick.
