Alternative Rock sounds with ‘The Color Blew’

The foundation for The Color Blew was laid in 2013 after the members were introduced by a mutual friend.

A passionate musical collaboration was formed when Liaan Horton from South African hard rock band “Blacklist Rock” teamed up with Armando Santos and Marius

Cronje, both from fellow South African-based band “Equils” to interpret and create aural art based on songs written by Liaan.

In early 2014 “The Color Blew” soon started writing fresh alternative rock songs as a unit and the band was officially ready to carve its name into the South African music scene.

Early 2016 saw the band recruit Lead Guitarist Timothy James Lotter, formerly from the east rand based band “Black Jacket”.

Timothy brought his polished playing qualities to the unit and integrated seamlessly into the core vision of The Color Blew.

The band sticks to its fundamental rule of working hard in the studio and playing hard on stage, no matter what the occasion.

The Color Blew holds nothing back and will be at Wheels and Wings on Saturday.

What genre of music do you play?

We would like to think Alternative Rock but there are so many influences, predominantly grunge and punk undertones.

But all in all we strive to create a sound that’s familiar to The Color Blew.

If that includes even a jazz flavor, so be it!

Can you tell us a bit about each member of the band?

Liaan Horton was born in Springs and soon realised he loved guitars more than toys.

At 13 he started his first band and aged 15 he was playing his original music to everyone who would listen from school yard to pubs and clubs.

Success beckoned and he released an E.P. with hard rock band Blacklist Rock in 2008.

This album included a song called God Knows that made it on to the soundtrack of the American TV series “Dexter”.

Armando Santos Was born in Portugal and probably would have played cool Latin funk- given half the chance.

Instead fell into a rudimentary school-band side drumming phase which further evolved into his unique style of sedimentary rock.

He recorded with both “De Rigieur” at Steeldale EMI Studios and “The Works Department” at Downtown Gallo Studios in Johannesburg.

Marius Cronje, initially from Heidelberg brought his energetic groove based playing style into the band “Equills” and seamlessly fitted into a three finger style lead-type bass accompaniment.

He is also affectionately known as “George” in the band.

Timothy James Lotter, originally from Nigel, joined his first band at the tender age of 10.

He started gigging regularly soon afterwards and has played a number of shows with a couple of bands including “Black Jacket” before his 18th birthday.

If we have never seen you live, what can we expect on September 10?

Absolute energy and passion, we bring it all.

If we are not physically and emotionally drained after a show then we feel like we have shared nothing meaningful with those who choose to listen.

Expect to see us wearing our hearts on our sleeves and living the moment on stage.

How can people get hold of you, do you have any social media?

We are absolutely obsessed with sharing everything we get up to on the web, you can follow us on Facebook, Reverbnation, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google + and on our website www.thecolorblew.com amongst others.
