Concert for welfare

Chris Venter (55) started a concert group in order to raise much needed funds for the Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare Society.

Chris, who recognised very talented singers in his church roped them in to assist him with his idea of starting a ‘Sing Afrikaans concert group’.

“To plan a concert like the one they had in mind takes up to a year,” says Chris.

In 2014 they held their first concert, Sing Afrikaans 1, which had 13 performers singing well-known Afrikaans songs in an attempt to raise funds for the welfare.

“We do it because we want to help, the underprivileged children need our assistance and we do what we can to help,” says Chris.

“Elmien Biddulph (54) the financial and admin manager at the Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare Society says, “Chris does not want any form of payment for doing this, he does it because children are very close to his heart.”

On Saturday they held their second performance of the fund raiser, Sing Afrikaans 2.

Money collected from ticket sales and food sold will all be given to the child welfare.

Elmien says, “We sing and entertain the audience in a bid to keep growing this initiative and keep going with this idea.”

Sanet van Moerkerken (48), who has worked at the welfare for 25 years, is grateful to Chris and his group for their assistance.

“The welfare is always in need of funds and this show is beneficial to those children in need,” says Sanet.

A local car company has sponsored a car for the welfare to raffle off tickets in order to raise funds.

The team at the welfare society are pushing for the raffle tickets to be sold before the end of February.

Sanet adds, “We need to start investing in our children, they are the generation of the future and they need our help,”
