Dancers’ achievements

Nine dancers from Dance Directions in Petersfield competed in the annual South African (SA) Grand Prix Dance Competition which was recently held in Sasolburg.

Mariska Wolmarans, dance teacher and choreographer, says the team also qualified to represent SA in Spain in 2016.

The competition in Sasolburg included hip hop, country, Bollywood, disco, Latin, jive, salsa, cha-cha, contemporary and jazz dance styles.

The team won nine gold medals, 13 silver medals and six trophies at this national competition.

“I am proud of all of my students and myself for what we have achieved in this competition,” says Wolmarans.

Amy-Jane Labuschagne received the trophy for the best entertainer for her Latin solo dance.

The trophy for the cutest dancer was awarded to Stephany van Vuuren for her belly dancing and Bollywood performance.

The best hip hop dancer trophy was given to Michelle Fourie who was also crowned the Student for the Year for hip hop, disco, jive, salsa, cha-cha, contemporary, jazz and Bollywood.

Mariska and Linda Stapelberg shared the overall first place trophy for the highest marks gained for salsa and hip hop duet dance.

They also shared the first place award for the best salsa and hip hop duet in the competition.

Mariska says this first place trophy is the highest award of the competition.

Jenna Senekal, Linda, Mariska, Ayden Janse van Rensburg, Jolene Mini, Michelle, Amy-Jane, Stephany and Paige Marais received medals at the competition.

The exact date for the Spain competition is not yet known.
